Commentary
In Greek mythology, the dead were ferried across the Acheron by the boatman, Charon, to the underworld. With “Acheron River”, I wanted to explore the relationship we have with these fantastical stories and how they are echoed in the present world we live in. The image I’ve reproduced is of the inlet located at Garry Point, in Steveston, just across from where I live. Seeing the dock vacant and the water disappear into the horizon, I found myself displacing this moment within another time. I see art as having the ability to present displaced moments within another context – in this case, a mythical context.
